How to Be Productive if You Have No Motivation

Cambridge English Dictionary defines motivation as “enthusiasm for doing something.” However, do you always need the enthusiasm to get something done?

Well, it’s easier to get things done when we’re driven, but it’s not a necessary precondition in order to do so.

Therefore, here are some tips that will help you be productive even though you don’t have motivation.

1. Discover why you lost your motivation

For starters, it’s crucial to determinate the reason why you don’t feel motivated, so ask yourself why you feel unmotivated and why it is so hard to get going. Just remember to be honest with your responses.

Maybe your future project isn’t challenging enough. Perhaps you had burnout, and you need to rest. Or maybe you miss proper strategies to tackle your tasks.

Whatever the reason is, finding what’s behind your lack of motivation helps you get to the root of the problem. Once you discover why you lost your spark, you will be able to mend the issue and carry on.

2. Find your why

Discovering your why, in other words why that action is important to you and what benefits it brings gives you a motivation boost and plenty of energy to take that endeavor.

Therefore, take some time to answer these questions and find a higher reason which will drive you, even when a rough time come.

For instance, let’s say you want to go to the gym three times a week.

- So, why is it important for you to go to the gym three times a week.
- Because I want to feel healthy.
- And why you want to feel healthy?
- Because I need a healthy body.
- Why do you need a healthy body?
- And so on…

As you can see, it’s vital to get to the core answer and don’t stop until you figure out the basic reason or benefit that will motivate you to complete any task or build any habit.

3. Good preparation is the key

Sometimes, even though you put all pieces of the puzzle together, you may fail to realize your plans. For that reason, it’s essential to prepare everything you need to accomplish that goal. Therefore, make sure you:

- Create a list of things you need in order to achieve your goal.
- Set all these items within your reach to prevent any failure.

Here is an example to illustrate this concept.

Let’s say you want to eat more fruit and vegetables. So, you got all the necessary groceries, wash them and made them ready for use. Also, you put some fruit in the basket on the desk in the living room, so anytime you have some cravings, you can easily grab an apple or banana and maintain a healthy diet.

Not so difficult, right? With good preparation, you will be ready even for the worst case scenario, and nothing will stop you from accomplishing your goals.

4. Put your plans on the calendar

You probably heard of the famous quote by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: “A goal without a plan is just a wish.”

Hence, if you want to materialize your objectives and make them happen, it’s vital to plan your activities. However, it’s not enough to keep everything in your head; you need to write down concrete actions on your calendar.

Use Google Calendar or any any other planner with time slots to schedule your activities. When you assign a certain task in an appropriate time frame, you will basically make a commitment and be responsible for your duties.

Besides, another useful trick comes from Lilly Smith, a content writer at Resumes Planet: "Tell your family and friends about your plans. It’s like some sort of a promise that will push you forward. People will expect to hear about your progress, so it will make you give your best and give them the good news.

5. Use 5-Second Rule

Sometimes when you feel unmotivated is really difficult to get up and just start. In those moments, use 5-Second Rule to stop hesitating and procrastinating. This golden rule won’t give your brain time to make different scenarios and reasons what can go wrong and why it is better to remain where you are.

Whenever you lose motivation, but still need to get your work done or carry on with your habits, simply count down backward from five – 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. That way, you will focus on your objective or commitment and push yourself to act.

For instance, if it’s so difficult for you to get up in the morning and face all the challenges that your day brings, then once your alarm gets off, instead of snoozing it, start counting and get up.

Last but not least, remember to reward yourself for a job well done. Treat yourself with a nice movie or your favorite cup of coffee. Take a moment to enjoy your little victory.
