New mobile app: FacileThings 3

AUTHOR: Francisco Sáez
tags Improvements Mobile App

We have just launched the new version 3 of the FacileThings mobile app. It is an application that you must look for in the Apple Store (iOS) or in the Play Store (Android) and download again since, being a completely new app, your device will not notify you that there has been a change of version.

It will temporarily have a different icon, to differentiate it from FacileThings 2 while both apps are available.

icono FacileThings 3

The app has been rebuilt to work directly with the facilethings.com API, thus eliminating the synchronization process that caused so many problems for some users. By reconstructing it, we have been able to update all the internal software and have also taken the opportunity to modify many details that will help make the interface more efficient.

So, apart from the absence of synchronization, you will see some differences with the previous version. The most interesting are described below.

Capture

To make the Capture stage easier, we have added the most used people tag list to the context tags. The capture button is at the top so that the keyboard does not hinder the task.

capture

Capturing off-line: If at the time of capturing something your mobile had no network, the captured stuff will be stored in local memory so you can send it later to the server — when the network is available again. In this case, you will see below a panel indicating that you have pending captured items. Use the Send button when you have network to actually capture them. The other button allows you to view the list of pending captured stuff.

offline capture

Clarify

The Clarify stage is now simpler. In the first instance you can see the description of the stuff to be clarified and the six possible actions.

If you need to edit the captured stuff, tap on its description and you will be able to edit the text, date, notes, checklist, perspective values, etc. Be sure to tap the top icon to actually update the data if you make any changes.

clarify

Organize: Lists

Now the lists are more similar to those of the web application. You have the main operation on the right side of each item. To access the rest of the available operations you need to swipe left on a list item.

lists and operations

If you tap on the description of an item you will be able edit the action, in the same way as in the Clarify stage. If the description of the action has a web link and you tap on it, your phone’s browser will be open and redirected to that URL.

In the Next Actions list, if you swipe right on an item in the list, you will be able to mark it directly as “focused” — or to remove the mark.

next actions focus

Now all the lists (not only the Next Actions one) can be filtered by tags. Tap on the icon in the bottom bar of the list to filter its items. The bottom bar will inform you of the tags that make up the active filter.

tags filter

The Someday/Maybe list has been added to the Organize menu. It did not appear in the previous version.

Organize: Projects

You can focus/unfocus a project In the Project List, by tapping the star-shaped icon that appears on the left of each in-progress project. By swiping left on a project, you can also change its status.

project list

Sequential projects show their Next Actions list. You can sort the tasks with the icon on the bottom left and edit the basic data of the project with the one on the bottom right. To reorder the tasks, simply drag them with your finger to the desired position.

sort sequential tasks

Kanban-type projects show two lists, the one for the to-do actions and the one for the doing actions. To move an action from one list to another, swipe left and you will see the available options.

kanban-style project

Engage

The Engage stage is quite similar to the previous one, but now it always saves the last visited list so you don’t have to change from the Calendar to Next Actions every time you use it. The filter What to do now? is now at the bottom.

Hi Ivan,

The first Android release had a configuration error. We've updated it. Please, download it again. Make sure it's version 3.0.11 ;)

Do we have the ability to see Checklists in the phone app? I don't see it but thought I would see if I am just overlooking it. Thanks

Hi Kurtis,

You can see the checklists associated to any actions in the app, but still not the Checklist menu option. Now that we have an app that will not produce data inconsistency problems, we can focus on improving functionality and adding all these missing things. The idea is to go month by month improving each of the options.

It's great, but:
1. It's working very slow - You must wait upto 10-15 seconds after every action. (and it isn't device issues, I work with Galaxy Note 9),
2. I'd like to see dated items in a project view too - not only next ones...

Hi Leonid,

1. We are not experiencing that slow performance you mention. Please, open a Support ticket so we check your account and data.
2. The main objective of this update was to remove the data synchronization process that gave so many problems to some users. From here we will improve the app month by month and we will be adding all those things that you miss.

On new app when I am looking at a next action and I star it to make it focused, I can't seem how to save this. If I try to use menu it asks about leaving page without saving and if you say no it returns you to same page. How do I save the change.

Hi Amanda,

To save the changes made in the task editor, you need to use the button that appears at the top right (round, green).

Its a bit cinfusing that you use a pencil as an icon for saving changes. In most other apps and program, the pencil means edit, not save

Hi Christian,

No, you're not blind. The Tickler File is not in the mobile app. We have not included it because the Tickle File is a list that is automatically managed, and it does not usually require any type of management.

I don't get why there is no Ticklerfile ??? I just created a task, that starts on March 2nd and is due on March 6th in a project. On the PC I can see it in the Ticklerfile and so be sure I've taken "care" of it an it can be off my mind until March the 2nd. On the PC I would also prefer a "Ticklerfile" section in the Projectview, so I could see it from there too, BUT IN THE MOBLE VERSION its just not there ! If I am not completly sure that I 've organized it, I will have no chance to check it.

The Ticklerfile for me is something that makes GTD so stressfree, because it hides everything that I don't need at the moment and so keeps my brain "free" of all that stuff David Allen talks about. But it should be there to check!!! Otherwise facile things 3 in its mobile verison is not the "trusted system" David also insits one should keep.

Hi Max,

Do you use some kind of password manager? Some users who use this kind of tools have had the same issue, and it's been solved by generating a new password.

Thank you. I did not have to do anything different other than wait a few minutes. It’s working now.

Hi,

In the ‘clarify’ stage ‘edit mode’, can you now add the choice criteria of how many minutes a task can be done?
